Certified pre-owned (CPO) vehicles are becoming the more popular option for individuals in the market for their next vehicle, but what exactly is a "certified" car?
Most people that only purchase brand new do so because they aren't sure about the reliability of a vehicle that someone else owned already. When purchasing a CPO vehicle, the dealership (original dealership brand) has their factory certified mechanics inspect the vehicle. During the inspection, the technician inspects the vehicle to ensure that it adheres to the standards required by the vehicle manufacturer to qualify as a certified vehicle. During the certification process, any parts on the vehicle that do not pass quality standards are replaced with factory original parts.
When a vehicle is initially brought to the dealership either as a lease return or trade-in (dealerships may opt to purchase a customer-leased vehicle directly from the bank), the dealership's Vehicle Appraiser will inspect the vehicle. The appraiser will evaluate the vehicle to see if it is a CPO candidate based on specific criteria. Each manufacturer's criteria vary, but the majority of vehicle manufacturers require similar qualifications. Chrysler's qualifications for any Dodge, Chrysler, Jeep, or Ram vehicle to qualify for certification is:
1) Vehicle must be no more than five (5) years old
2) Vehicle must pass a clean vehicle history check (Must not have any accidents)
3) Vehicle must pass a 125-point inspection process that involves both mechanical and appearance criteria.
Chrysler CPOs offer the buyer the following:

6) Plus, Chrysler offer something you won’t find from any other manufacturer: Certified Warranty Upgrades. Imagine that ... a warranty that will cover your CPOV for as long as you own it!
So as you can see, purchasing a certified vehicle certainly has its benefits. Please keep in mind that to be a truly certified vehicle, the vehicle must be "certified" by the original manufacturer of the vehicle. For this reason, if you are purchasing a Dodge, the vehicle will be available for sale by a Dodge dealership. If you are looking at a Hyundai, then the certified vehicle would be available for sale by a Hyundai dealership. Some dealerships that sell pre-owned vehicles will "certify" cars that are not their own brand, or offer dealer certifications. In this case, it is important to find out exactly what the certification is and what is/isn't covered. In most cases involving certifications or warranties provided by the dealership and not the manufacturer, the vehicle warranties promised at sale are only valid at the dealership the vehicle was sold.
With the rising costs of vehicles across the board from all manufacturers, individuals in the market to purchase their next vehicle no longer needs to be worried about the vehicle's condition if they are looking at a manufacturer-based certified pre-owned vehicle. Manufacturers are providing additional warranty coverages free and some like Chrysler even offer available upgrades to meet or exceed customer needs. With a certified pre-owned vehicle, individuals can drive off the dealership lot knowing they are driving a safe, reliable vehicle.
