Stop/Start System: What's In It For Me?

Mopar Mike's Blog | Stop/Start System: What's In It For Me?

You may have noticed that since last year, most new cars have a base-option called Stop/Start. Many people don't even know what it is, and for those individuals, they may be introduced to it without warning. For those of you that are unaware of what this feature is, it is system in which when the car/vehicle with the Stop/Start system comes to a full stop, the vehicle's computer sends a signal to the engine to cut spark and fuel. As soon as the driver lifts his or her foot from the brake pedal, the engine restarts. For those that aren't aware of the feature the system may give them a surprise as when they come to a complete stop, they may believe that their vehicle has stalled out. It is lucrative that when an Auto Sales Professional delivers a car, that they go over the feature with the new car owner to ensure they are aware of the system, how it works, and how it benefits them.

Some may question if the Stop/Start system is even good for the car. The answer is yes. Vehicles equipped with the Stop/Start system are also equipped with larger batteries and stronger starters than if the same vehicle were not equipped with the system. Others may question it's actual fuel saving technology, arguing that cars consume more fuel starting than if you just left them idling. This thought process initiated in direct correlation to a "cold start." This is why so many Mopar enthusiasts love to post "cold start" videos of their muscle cars because the motors growl a lot louder, utilizing more fuel when the motors haven't warmed up yet. Once the motor is warmed up, the fuel consumption doesn't fluctuate with starting the vehicle. Therefore the pausing of the motor is most certain to save fuel. Most vehicle manufacturers state that the Stop/Start system will increase fuel economy by five to ten percent. The vehicles also have precautionary systems in place when the system won't engage, or show that the system is not ready. Such circumstances will be if the driver's seat belt is not fastened, doors are open, air cabin temperature is being regulated (A/C or Heat), and low battery voltage.

For the consumer, a five to ten percent increase in fuel efficiency is certainly nothing to scoff at, but it should be noted that consumers aren't the only beneficiaries to this system. The dramatic increase in popularity in this feature is due to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The EPA recently created incentives for vehicle manufacturers to include this system in their vehicles. You might also notice, that most vehicles equipped with the Stop/Start system have a button (See picture above) to turn the feature off. This feature is convenient when driving through high-traffic areas so your vehicle doesn't keep shutting off every time you stop. (All equipped Dodge Chrysler Jeep Ram products have this feature.) You may also have realized that although there is a button to shut the feature off, the system automatically is on every time the vehicle starts. There is a reason for that.

The EPA has created regulations on how vehicle's fuel economy is calculated. If a vehicle has the Stop/Start system, and that system is engaged every time the vehicle starts, then the vehicle's fuel economy is calculated only with the system engaged. If the vehicle gives the option to permanently turn off the Stop/Start system, then the vehicle fuel economy is tested with the system on, and again with the system off. They then use an average of the two tests for the vehicle's fuel economy rating. The auto manufacturers also receive emissions credits for the system being incorporated into vehicles.

This system certainly has it's benefits and will be more widely seen in all vehicles from hybrids to pickups so whether you love it or hate it, Stop/Start is here and as consumers it is something we must get used to. For those of us that don't like the system, most manufacturers place the button to turn the feature off in a convenient place in the middle console area.
