Jeep Hill Descent Control

Mopar Mike's Blog | Jeep Hill Descent Control

Today's vehicles have more technology than ever, not just in Jeeps. When purchasing a vehicle, it can be very overwhelming to get a detailed walk through on every piece of technology of a vehicle we are purchasing. If you are like most, you allow the salesperson to go over key components that you are most interested in or are most important to you. You think you'll look up the rest later, but never do.

Now you own a vehicle and still don't know all the features. This happens to many people and in the Jeep world, Hill Descent Control (HDC) is one feature that most consumers aren't well versed in... until now! HDC is an option that is available on all Jeep Wrangler, Renegade, Compass, Cherokee, and Grand Cherokees. So what exactly is HDC and how to I properly engage it?

Hill Descent Control comes available on all Jeep Wrangler models, but is an exclusive feature for Jeep Trailhawk models in the Renegade, Compass, Cherokee, and Grand Cherokee. HDC "Allows smooth and controlled downhill descents by using the antilock brake system. The system can automatically descend the vehicle without driver input." according to Jeep.com. HDC when engaged, will detect steep declines and automatically apply controlled brake pressure to control the speed of the vehicle while descending down a hill.

The feature is intended for low-speed off-road driving, in conditions where you feel the need to allow the Jeep to control your speed during your descent. By pressing the HDC button, you will enable the HDC system, but it won't become active until certain driving operating conditions are met.

To Enable:

1) Enable 4WD Low: The Driveline must be switched over to 4WD Low Range. 4WD Low activation may differ depending on which Jeep vehicle you own, and you should refer to your owners manual for proper 4WD Low Range operation.
2) Press Hill Descent Control Button:  In order to activate the HDC, after pressing the HDC button, three additional key components must be met in order to activate the system:
1) Vehicle speed must be below 5MPH (8KM/H)
2) Parking brake must be released
3) Driver door is closed.

Once enabled, the system will activate when the vehicle begins driving down a grade of 8% or greater. The driver may control the speed of the vehicle while operating the HDC system by utilizing the +/- paddle shifters or buttons. The speed can be overridden if the driver activates the throttle or brake during operation.

The system will automatically deactivate if the driver overrides the HDC by pressing the throttle or brake, if the vehicle exceeds 20 MPH, if the hill grade is less than 8%, or the vehicle changes to an uphill grade. The system will also deactivate if the vehicle is shifted to the Park position, if the driver presses the HDC switch/button again, if the driver shifts the vehicle out of 4WD Low, applies the brake, or opens a door.
