When Other Auto Manufacturers Reduce Down, Stellantis Doubles Down!

Mopar Mike's Blog | When Other Auto Manufacturers Reduce Down, Stellantis Doubles Down!

While other automakers were just trying to survive the past year with so much uncertainty with the Covid-19 virus, it didn't stop the FCA (now Stellantis) from making power moves!  Not only did the FCA finalize a merger with Peugeot to become the 4th largest automaker worldwide, but they never stopped laying down the hammer to continue the innovation and firsts in the automotive industry.  For a year with a global pandemic, sickness, and closure, FCA didn't let any of that stop them!  Let's take a look at what FCA/Stellantis was up to while other manufacturers reduced down.

The 2021 Dodge Durango Hellcat SRT:  The Hellcat Durango is a one-year, limited production vehicle.  Bringing to the table 710 horsepower and 640 lb-ft of torque, this beast will take you from 0-60 MPH in just 3.5 short seconds and will travel the quarter mile in 11.5 seconds.

The 2021 Jeep Wrangler 392:  The Wrangler 392 is what everyone's been craving... and if history has a way of hinting at things, I think the Wrangler 392 is just the preview of what is coming.  The Wrangler 392 is the first Wrangler in recent history to house a V-8 motor under the hood.  Naturally aspirated, the 392 Wrangler boasts the legendary 6.4 liter, 392 cubic inch aluminum block Hemi engine.  With a historical 470 Horsepower AND lb-ft of torque, the new V-8 factory-production Wrangler will get you from 0-60 in just 4.5 seconds.  So the question begs to be asked... is this just the beginning?  Are there plans to try to stuff a 6.2L 700+ Hellcat powered SRT motor in one of these off roading legends?  Only time will tell!

4xE:  One of the major desirable reasons for FCA merging with Peugeot was their handle on electronic vehicle (EV) technology.   Now under Stellantis, Jeep has introduced a brand-new lineup of vehicles featuring 4xE technology.  What is 4xE you ask?  It's electronic vehicle capability within four wheel drive / all wheel drive vehicles!  The first of the Jeeps to roll out with 4xE technology will be the 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xE Hybrid.  But shortly in it's footsteps you will see 4xE technology finding its way into the rest of the Jeeps including the Renegade, Compass, Cherokee, and Grand Cherokee models.

TRX:  SRT makes its way back onto the list for the second time with the introduction of the Hellcat powered, 6.2L Supercharged V-8 Hemi engine finding its way under the hood of the 2021 Ram 1500 TRX!  With a Raptor-eating 702 Horsepower and 650 lb-ft of torque, the Ram 1500 TRX absolutely obliterates the Ford Raptor on and off the road!

SRT showing up twice on this list brings up another discussion point.  After the Stellantis merger, shortly thereafter it was announced that they dissolved the SRT division, and those working within the SRT division were dispersed amongst the other divisions.  This created not only confusion, but also chaos as many people were led to believe that the SRT Brand was no more.  THIS IS NOT TRUE.  The SRT brand is still here, and will continue to be here in the future.  The truth of the matter is, with SRT technology being utilized essentially amongst all the Mopar brands, it made sense to reorganize the team members within such brands.  It's essentially what they have been doing anyway in order to bring SRT technology to the Jeep Grand Cherokee, the Jeep Wrangler, the Dodge Charger, Challenger, and now the Ram.  Who knows... maybe we'll see a hellcat powered Pacifica?  Just kidding... Nevertheless, the writing was on the wall.   It just made sense to share the SRT staffing throughout the Mopar brands.  Will there be changes?  Yes.  Will we see EV technology in the SRT vehicles... you should hope so!  Doing so would mean instant torque off the line!  I can't wait to see what is going to happen within the SRT lineup in the future!  Those involved in the SRT division will continue working together, it just won't be all within the same department.

Reintroduction of the Wagoneer:  With an anticipated dealer-arrival of sometime between May-June, Jeep has announced the Jeep Wagoneer and Jeep Grand-Wagoneer being brought back to the Jeep lineup for the first time in 30 years.  The new Wagoneers, like most newly-designed vehicles with iconic nameplates, will share certain characteristic traits that pay homage to the originals.  With that, they will also boast many updates that clearly differentiate they aren't here to continue where the icons of the past left off.  The new Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer will fit up to 8 passengers, allowing large families to be able to explore the world together like families did in the previous Wagoneers, but will no longer be adorned with it's signature wooden paneling of the past.   Now, with technology ever-changing, the Wagoneer vehicles will be looking to up the ante in the world of luxury.  They will be competing with the likes of the Chevrolet Suburban, the GMC Yukon Denali, the Cadillac Escalade, the Ford Explorer and Expedition, Lincoln Navigator, and more!  The Wagoneer is equipped standard with the 5.7 V-8 Hemi, whereas the Grand Wagoneer has the 6.4L V-8 Hemi.  With many different trim levels available, these full size- SUVs will come equipped from the basic comforts we have all come to expect in our vehicles.  But for those wanting luxury, the higher trims will be equipped with the latest and greatest technology, bringing the price tags of the largest Jeep vehicles in the brand's history past the 6 figure mark.

While other manufacturers were looking to survive, FCA/Stellantis was looking to thrive!  They took risks other auto manufacturers haven't.  When other brands like Ford and Chevrolet have announced their decisions to go fully EV, FCA/Stellantis have shown their intent to continue down the Mopar tradition of muscle and power by introducing numerous new vehicles to their lineup that are equipped with the historical and powerful Hemi V-8 motors.  I look forward to seeing how they continue moving forward in the years to come.
